END NEARIn a football match, a referee gives an extra-time within which a team must come out with a victory to avoid penalties, if the match ends goalless. And most times, all teams strive to avoid the dreaded penalty shots. They go all-out to come out with a win during extra-time.

In Luke 13, Christ Jesus spoke this parable:

He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down (Luke 13:6-9).

In this parable, we are told about a certain man requiring fruitfulness of his fig tree. Year in and year out it is provided with the necessary nourishment, but it still fails to yield the much awaited fruits. Finally, the owner gets peeved and seeks its destruction. However, the dresser pleads for an extra-time, within which it must yield fruit.

Allegorically, many people are in their extra-time. God had provided them with all resources for their fruitfulness and yet they are failing to yield fruits He desires. Like the man who hid his talent in the “parable of the talent”, they have hidden the gifts God had given them. They have failed to make use of God’s provision to yield fruits unto Him. With all the bountiful goodness provided by God, He expects his children to be fruitful; to bear fruits of righteousness unto godliness. He expects them to manifest Christ to this dark and godless world.

Our Heavenly Father has provided glorious opportunities to His children, yet some are failing to make use of these wonderful opportunities to manifest His goodness and greatness to the world. They’re slumbering in fear and laziness. But, it is time to wake up and get going, O child of the Most High! Get over with fear and live that life God had ordained for you, even before the world was formed. Fruitfulness is a command from God which must be obeyed. It is not optional; we must “be fruitful“(Genesis 1:28).

To the ungodly and the sinner, know that the extra-time for your repentance is almost expended; for the end of all things is at hand (1 Peter 4:7). Be not ignorant of this one thing: the LORD is not slack concerning His promise of Judgment, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering to us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). The time to repent is now! Very soon the grace period will expire. Get up and do something for Christ’s sake!

“The axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.” (Matthew 3:10). Rise up from your slumber and get productive!
